A leading figure in contemporary jazz, Avishai Cohen is a double bassist whose virtuosic playing has redefined the role of his instrument on the international stage. Born in Israel to a family with Spanish, Greek, and Polish roots, he discovered the bass at 14 after listening to Jaco Pastorius and Chick Corea’s Return to Forever. Spotted by Corea in 1997, he joined his sextet Origin, where he spent seven years honing his musical language—blending groove, melody, and improvisation. In 2003, he founded his own label, Razdaz Recordz, and his first iconic trio with Mark Guiliana and Shai Maestro. His distinctive compositions, infused with jazz, Latin, and Middle Eastern influences, have captivated audiences around the world. Today, he’s taken on the role of mentor himself, surrounding himself with a new generation of remarkably talented musicians.
