In 2023, the Derbyshire-born singer released Labour, a potent, liberated pop-folk anthem celebrating self-love as a weapon against the patriarchy. TikTok exploded, Spotify tallied millions of streams, and messages poured in from women around the world who recognised themselves in every line. Since then, the gothic-leaning guitarist and songwriter with a fascination for Greek mythology and art history has outshone the competition. Cacophony (2024) is a heroic, lyrically-sharp album inspired by Stephen Fry’s Mythos and haunted by the shadows of Kate Bush and Florence + the Machine (for whom she opened this year). This year, Paris Paloma returns to Montreux for the second time, after her first thrilling performance on the free stage three years ago.
