The Montreux Jazz Festival is proud to announce the three winners of the Montreux Jazz Talent Awards: France’s Højde, the Turkish band Islandman, and the American Jalen N’Gonda.
Electronic improvisation, hypnotic neo-soul, frenetic funk, and inventive beatbox: the sixteen participants in the Montreux Jazz Talent Awards won over the audience of the House of Jazz this summer, with the house often bursting at the seams. This new format, successor to the Montreux Jazz Competitions, made it possible to open the competition to different musical approaches, especially electronic forms.
For months, the Festival's programmers hit their networks and investigated international trends in the search for the jazz of tomorrow in all its forms. The performances by the sixteen participants were evaluated during the Festival by the programmers and a jury comprising three people chosen through the Montreux Jazz Insider app. After the Festival, the concert videos were sent to an Artists Committee composed of Aloe Blacc, Richard Bona, Derrick Hodge, and Bugge Wesseltoft, to take advantage of their expertise and artistic sensibilities.
THREE ARTISTS AWARDED
The nationalities of the winners – French, Turkish, and American – and their different musical approaches are the perfect reflection of the diversity of today’s jazz. Improvisation is at the heart of the electro-acoustical projects of Højde and Islandman. The former brilliantly merges piano and machines, while the latter audaciously blends psychedelic sounds and Oriental rhythms. As for Jalen N’Gonda, his musical studies in jazz and his discovery of Liverpool’s pop culture have led him to develop an approach to soul that is rich and effective.
