Both the most famous Arab-language rock band in the world, and the sworn adversary of all censure and conservatism! Formed in Beirut in 2008 and today considered a legend by the LGBTQ+ community, this quintet has become the voice of young people all over the Middle East who aspire to individual liberty. Political corruption, police brutality, religious hypocrisy: Mashrou’ Leila (“One Night Project”) tirelessly denounces the wrongs and contradictions of the Arab world and defends social equality all over, and with an admirable determination. This combative stance of the quintet, whose four albums blend indie-pop, raging rock, and Oriental sounds, led to them being forbidden to perform in Egypt in September 2017. Since then? Singer Hamed Sinno and his band-mates are still going full steam ahead, unflinchingly confronting taboos.
