The wild child of French metal is back. On their sixth album, the aptly named Magma, the riffs are hot like molten rock and the voices as powerful as an erupting volcano. They were nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2017 and they’re really going for it. Gojira’s turbulent, explosive music is filled with raw emotion and complex structures. Their wide-ranging sound conjures up a cosmic atmosphere, with hypnotic vocal melodies, between scream and clean. Their lyrics are more hippy than metal. Gojira advocate ecology, peace and spirituality through introspective mantras delivered with conviction. Metal will be celebrating its triumphant return to the Montreux Jazz Lab, two years after Slayer and Meshuggah’s sensational performances.
