His model? Monty Alexander. His favorite song? “I Love You Porgy” by Nina Simone. His roots? Not the ‘French touch’ with which his hits “So Much to Me” (2013) and “Skyline” (2017) have fortuitously associated him, but the jazz he has loved since childhood. Vincent Fenton, 27, is a French-New Zealander multi-instrumentalist. Part of the Roche Musique stable, since the release of the stellar French Kiwi Juice (2017) he has been the flag-bearer of a redefined French ‘new house’. Sensual and nonchalant, finding inspiration for his grooves in sticky funk, cool soul, and smoky electro-jazz, this Frenchman and former sound engineer for the big screen pleases everyone: he has earned plaudits from all over the music world and at Montreux, where his class marked his visit of three years ago.
