Israeli bassist, composer, arranger – and now singer – Avishai Cohen has been moving between jazz, pop and classical music with ease for over twenty years. He is recognized for his love of melody and improvisation on the bass and piano, but we were impatient to hear him singing. He’s done it now, on the album 1970, which is among the most accessible of his varied works. 1970 is a worthy successor to From Darkness and has already won over a wide audience. The twelve tracks are a mixture of moving ballads in English, and Middle Eastern folkloric songs. He played the Stravinski with Chick Corea and Bobby McFerrin back in 2001 – this will be the sixth time he plays in Montreux.
