Rapper Future, initially programmed for 4 July at the Montreux Jazz Lab, is canceling part of his European tour, unfortunately including his Montreux date. For that reason, two brilliant representatives of today’s hip-hop, Ty Dolla $ign and Young Thug, will join A$AP Ferg for an evening 100% focused on the new generation of US artists.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Future concert is canceled: the management of the American artist Future has explained that the rapper needs to remain Stateside to rehearse for his tour with Drake, and that he was canceling some of his European shows, including the one in Montreux where he was to share billing with A$AP Ferg. The Festival’s programmers have booked two shining examples of the renewal of US rap for an evening 100% focused on the new generation of American artists and which showcases no longer two, but three artists practically never seen in our region:
Ty Dolla $ign
California’s Ty Dolla $ign made his mark in 2011 with the catchy and dance-worthy hit “Toot it and Boot it”. After further success with his mixtape Beach House, he joined Atlantic Records, then signed with Wiz Khalifa’s label Taylor Gang Entertainment in 2013. In 2015 he released his first LP Free TC, dedicated to his incarcerated brother and featuring such major names as Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, and Kanye West, as well as other up-and-comers including O.T. Genasis. Like Young Thug, Ty Dolla $ign is fresh and real, in the same vein as Future, with whom he has already collaborated.
Second of 10 siblings, at 24 Young Thug is a spell-binding standard-bearer for Atlanta hip-hop. Called a “rap weirdo” due to his unhinged flow, his intricate, eccentric, and unfettered vocals are quite distinct from what we typically hear, even in today’s world of auto-tuned trap. In early 2016 he released a new mixtape, Slime Season 3.
