Africa is everything! Youssou N’Dour says it loud and clear on his latest album, Africa Rekk. This man from Senegal wants a united Africa from Cape Town to Algiers and Cairo. His album combines influences from across the continent. Mbalax and Wolof rhythms are combined with rumba and other traditional sounds. The singer decided to work with young musicians with a more urban sound. So keyboards and machines feature alongside tama, balafon and djembe sounds. Youssou N’Dour is a major figure in world music and has worked with Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon and Neneh Cherry. After a period as Senegal's Minister of Tourism, the singer of “7 seconds” is preparing for his comeback on-stage. Like Angélique Kidjo an ambassador from Africa to the Festival, he will perform for the ninth time at Montreux.
