Peter Broderick just needs a few notes on the piano or violin to create his bewitching universe. He’s a master of minimalist melodies, composing modern, ethereal music between neo-folk and experimental pop. He’s a hyperactive multi-instrumentalist who is never short of ideas. He’s already got around 20 discs to his name. In 2012, he composed two intimate albums with his good friend Nils Frahm. The two musicians are both signed to avant-garde label Erased Tapes. Peter Broderick released two stunningly beautiful discs on the label last year. Grunewald, which came out in December, is filled with the natural reverberation of the church of the same name, a key place on the Berlin experimental scene. Partners, which was published earlier in the year, uses John Cage’s concept of chance. Broderick used a dice to pick notes at random and create random melodies. Amazing!
