Finland’s Olli Hirvonen won the 2016 Socar Montreux Jazz Electric Guitar Competition. This guitarist has fashioned a unique style by combining his multiple influences, ranging from jazz to rock and including some more experimental soundscapes. Currently based in Brooklyn, this musician has diplomas from the Manhattan School of Music and the Sibelius Academy. Among his noteworthy distinctions, he was elected artist of the year by the Pori Jazz Festival in 2011 and Performer of the Year by the Finlandia Foundation National in 2015. Hirvonen released his first album, Detachment, in April 2014. Another album, entitled New Helsinki, is out in April 2017. He unveiled an excerpt from this work at the closing concert of the Montreux Jazz Academy during an ethereal and sumptuous six-string dialog with Kurt Rosenwinkel.
