Charged with emotion and roaring. Sixty years into her career, Mavis Staple’s voice is still just as profound in the brilliant Livin’ on a High Note. This album that came out in 2016 was specially written for her by an impressive lineup of artists. Nick Cave, Ben Harper, Aloe Blacc, Benjamin Booker, and Valerie June all contributed to writing yet another page in the Mavis Staples story. A monument of soul and gospel since the 1950s, she started off as the voice of the Staple Singers, with whom she had a string of hits including “This May Be The Last Time”, later covered by the Rolling Stones. Mavis and the Staple Singers then struggled alongside Martin Luther King by recording several protest songs such as “March Up Freedom’s Highway”. Mavis Staples has never lost that militant spirit: earlier this year, she sang with the Canadian group Arcade Fire on the single “I Give You Power”, published hours before the end of the Barack Obama presidency. Still raising awareness!
