The Cinematic Orchestra are coming back to Montreux 16 years after their first concert at the Miles Davis Hall. They had just composed a soundtrack for 1929 silent film Man with a Movie Camera. This is something that the group’s founder, Jason Swinscoe, excels at. In the ‘90s, he created a club where the concept was for DJs to recreate film soundtracks. But The Cinematic Orchestra’s real strength is expressing narrative and images through music. Jason Swinscoe creates a stripped-back universe, haunted by ghostly piano and shocking chords. In concert, the compositions take on a new dimension thanks to the musicians’ improvisation and bewitching dialogs with Swinscoe’s electronic textures.
