Ten years ago, jazz lost Joe Zawinul, one of its most adventurous pianists. He was the founder of the group Weather Report, and played with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way. Emile Parisien and Vincent Peirani Pour have devised “File Under Zawinul” as a tribute to him, reuniting various people who played with the Weather Report pianist: his favorite drummer Paco Séry, bassist Linley Marthe who he really admired, with percussionists Mino Cinelu and Aziz Sahmaoui rounding out the crazy rhythm section. The next generation of French jazz is involved too, with colorful guitarist Manu Codjia and the master of the Fender Rhodes, Tony Paeleman. Together, the eight musicians celebrate Zawinul’s music through an exceptional mixture of cultural and musical influences.
