The Montreux Jazz 2 Foundation for Creative and Cultural Exchange was established in order to facilitate a dialogue between artists at home and abroad, to bring together jazz and classical music enthusiasts, to build bridges between the public and internationally renowed musicians, to provide young musicians from across the world with the opportunity to meet and create lasting friendships, to create a dialogue between music and texts, to inspire children to explore their musicality, to export our local culture, to break down barriers between musical styles, to mix the arts with music, to create a high profile platform for popular music…

Competitions
Solo piano and voice. It seemed only natural to support artists who will one day be catapulted into the public eye. Young musicians are encouraged to participate by professional music and clubs around the world and some of them are selected to take part in the finals at Montreux. Well-known musicians make up the juries of what are the only jazz competitions in the world integrating improvisation, blues and composition.

To lend a helping hand to local musicians too, the Conseil de Léman – an association composed of representatives from the French departments of Ain and Haute-Savoie and the Swiss cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais – has joined forces with the Festival to launch the Tremplin Lémanique. This competition, devoted to a different musical style each year, rewards one band from the Lake Geneva region.

In 1999, the desire to provide one such opportunity led Claude Nobs, founder and director of the Festival, to create the world’s first international solo competition for professional jazz pianists. His aim was not only to lend a helping hand to young musicians struggling for recognition, but also to enable them to meet pianists of the same age and level from other countries.

Montreux Jazz Tremplin Lémanique Jazz 2011
The Conseil du Léman, an association grouping the French departments of Ain and Haute Savoie and the Swiss cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais, is to increase its involvement in the Montreux Jazz Festival this year. Bands from these three regions whose average age is thirty or under can take part in the Tremplin Lémanique. Every year, a different musical genre is to be chosen. Jazz opened the first edition in 2008, then Rock in 2009, electro in 2010 and in 2011, it is the turn to Jazz again!

By bringing together talents from around the world on the same stage for unique encounters, by blending cultures and generations for an evening, the Festival’s creations are intended as an original and living tributes to the styles and artists that have marked the history of music.

Didactica
Perhaps the best expression of the Foundation 2’s philosophy can be found in the context of the educational projects. Ever more popular, the work-shops began in the early days of the Festival and are totally in keeping with Claude Nobs’ desire to give the public and musicians an opportunity to share unique moments. In the sumptuous setting of the Petit Palais, music-lovers spend an hour or two in the company of legendary artists they usually only see from afar. The musicians generously give their time and obviously enjoy presenting demonstrations, debates, masterclasses or telling personal anecdotes in the theme of their choice. It goes without saying that music is omnipresent.
Workshops
Early in the history of the Festival, Claude Nobs regretted the lack of contact between the musicians and the public outside the context of the concerts. He sought a way to provide a specific setting for more intimate musical encounters. For the past fifteen years ago or so, afternoon workshops at the Petit Palais have given these encounters a more official structure.
Some choose to tell anecdotes related to their careers, others give technical demonstrations or launch debates on a specific theme. The artists enjoy these rare opportunities to meet their public and many have represented several workshops over the years.

Music in the Park
During the Festival, the public can attend free concerts in the Parc Vernex. Devoted to discoveries of all musical genres, this stage enables Swiss and international bands to play to large, enthusiastic audiences and is a rare opportunity for them to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a big festival and meet professional. For the public it provides a chance to see upcoming musicians of a high standard. Rarely seen in Europe, traditional American big bands complete the bill.

Eastern Delights
What do we really know about the east of our continent? What do we know of the abundance of living cultures, that mosaic of people who are only too happy to be able to speak of their hopes and their stories. The Eastern Delights project is dedicated to the music and aromas of the fascinating countries between the Adriatic Sea and the Ural Mountains. In 2010 and 2011, Poland, Russia and Turkey were honored. In 2012, Kosovo will be brought to the forefront.
Venues
Petit Palais
Wood, light and atmosphere that you would think no longer existed make up the decor offered by one of the region’s most beautiful halls. In the prestigious setting, with its backdrop of lake and mountains, the artist will present their workshops surrounded by the sparkling sounds of their music.
Château de Chillon
Within the castle’s eight-hundred year old walls, a concert can be nothing but unique. Words spoken in the majestic decor of this guardian of Lake Geneva take on a different meaning.
A bar is available before and after the shows.
The day of the show, the ticket gives free entrance to the Castle starting from 10am.
L'hôtel des Trois Couronnes
Since 1842, the Hôtel des Trois Couronnes stands on the shores of Lake Geneva facing the Alps. This venerable hotel was renovated in 2000 by talented architects who have taken into account its rich history while adding a modern twist.
